This is an important meeting that will get the season off to a smooth start.
The general meeting for the Windham Community Gardeners has been changed to Saturday May 4 from 9:30-11:30 at the Windham Public Library. This change is due to a lack of meeting space on the April 27th date. Please mark your calendars as we really need a good turn out for this meeting as we have much info to share.
This is an important meeting that will get the season off to a smooth start. The Windham Community Garden is pleased to announce that we have been awarded a grant from the Kitchen Gardeners International. This is a new organization and this is their first mini grant called Sow It Forward. It included money, a gift card to Gardeners Supply Company, $55.00 worth of non-GMO seeds, a subscription to a garden planner and a book, 'The Year-Round Vegetable Gardener" by Niki Jabbour.
This award will help us advance the garden in many ways and we truly appreciate it. Gardening season is just around the corner and we are busy with planning for another successful season. All garden beds are spoken for this year. So stop by when things start growing and see this great resource. Winners: Rustler's - 1st Place

The next educational meeting will be on Tuesday, August 11, at 6:30 pm in the garden. Please being a chair, bug spray and water if it is hot. Hopefully we will be able to identify the pests in the garden and remediation for them. This should be a hands on meeting.
It is high harvest time and it is important for you to pick your vegetables when they are ripe. There are several garden beds that have not been attended to in a while. Please get in there if you can. If you have trash, please take it with you when you leave the garden. We have a carry in, carry out policy! The next educational meeting will be on Tuesday, August 7, at 6:30 pm in the garden. Please being a chair, bug spray and water if it is hot. Hopefully we will be able to identify the pests in the garden and remediation for them. This should be a hands on meeting.
When you are in the garden please check for potato bugs, cucumber beetles and squash bugs. Hand picking is the best way to get rid of them. Carrying a container of soapy water to put them in will usually kill them off. Look under the leaves to check for eggs and if you see any squish them. I find gloves handy for this chore. We are a murderous bunch. Each of us has found the easiest way for us to get rid of the bugs. For me it is gloves and soapy water, others use scissors to cut the squash bugs in half. If you have trash, please take it with you when you leave the garden. We have a carry in, carry out policy! Also during the hot weather be sure to get to the garden to water. If you are away please have a neighbor water for you. The Windham Community Garden will be offering a series of garden lectures starting in May. All gardeners are encouraged to attend every session. The schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, July 3rd, 6:30 PM - Dick Brzozowski, subject will be whatever the group would like to talk about. Tuesday, August 7th, 6:30 PM - Dick Brzozowski, subject to be announced Tuesday, September 4th, 6:30 PM - Dick Brzozowski, subject to be announced All educational programs will be held in the garden. Please bring your own chair if you want to sit. If it rains it will be held in Room 306 at Windham High School. Educational sessions are free and open to the public. March 31st is the last day that we are accepting applications for a garden bed. If you haven't already applied, now is the time! Next week the garden committee will be reviewing all the applications and will begin the process of assigning beds. Hope you are all having fun planning your gardens and looking forward to getting started. Stay tuned for more details soon.
